Walk The Moon

(5th July 2012 - Phone Interview)
We had the pleasure of speaking with Kevin Ray, Bassist for indie-rock band Walk The Moon. We talked about; how the band got together, the name, their new album and upcoming tours.

How did you guys meet and get together as a band?
Nick’s[singer]mum and my mum were friends when they were younger so me and Nick have also been friends from a young age. Me and Nick had always played in bands and after I finished college Nick called me up and asked if I would come to Cincinnati and play bass in the band he was starting and I brought in our drummer Sean who I have known since middle school. Eli our guitarist was very well known in the Cincinnati music scene so we snapped him up before anyone else got him.

How did you all come up with the band name?
We were all sitting around trying to think of a name for the band and we came up with around about two hundred names. At the time though every band was on MySpace so what we done was we took all the names we came up with and typed them into MySpace and as it happened every name we initially thought of was already taken. One night while trying to come up with some more band names we were listening to ‘Walk The Moon’ by The Police and we all just though “walk the moon would be a great name”, so we checked MySpace and there was no band using the name so we made it ours.

Your new self titled album is out just now, what was the inspiration behind this album?
Well we have released other albums and various other EP’s. We’re now on a major label and we are now making music that the whole world will hear. So we wanted to make a record that is inspired by us as a band and on the record we wanted to capture the energy of our live shows onto our album.

How long did it take to record the new album?
On this album it was the first time we recorded in a proper big recording studio, with a budget. We moved to Atlanta, Georgia and we were recording for twelve hours a day and in total it took us about a month and a half or two months to record.  We were recording twelve hours a day and we really got to know each other better in the short space of time we were there.

Are there any big tours coming up this year?
We are non-stop touring until January and then off for a couple of weeks then touring again for six months. Just now [July] we are in the UK of 2 weeks then we go back to the states, then we will be back in September/October on tour for five/six weeks in UK and Europe with Fun.

Is there anything else that you would like to say?
It’s really exciting as a band after building a big fan base back home in the states to come over here and meet new friends and gain new fans. It’s also nice to come so far from home and see people having fun and enjoying our music and we can't wait to come back and play some shows.
